Memory

Memory

Vresk can carry facts about you from one conversation into the next, so you do not start every chat as a stranger. It stays yours to stop: memory has one off switch, and one button makes Vresk forget everything it saved.

Nothing is written without telling you first. This page covers where the facts come from, how they are used, and how to silence or erase them.

One memory, whichever engine

Vresk offers many engines, but you do not keep a separate memory for each. There is one memory, and it is yours — the engine serving a conversation is granted it for the turn. Pick a different engine for your next task, or a different one again next month, and the same facts ride along. Models are transient; what Vresk knows about you stays in one place.

Recall is quiet. When you send a message, Vresk picks the saved facts that look relevant to it and hands them to the engine as background. It does not paste your entire memory into every turn. And when you ask an engine to work from material you supply — a file, a note — it is told to take its facts from that material alone, not to fold your memories into it.

Remember: the switch that writes

For most accounts, new chats remember by default, and Vresk tells you so once, before anything from your chats is saved to memory, with a way to turn it off. Accounts our hosting provider places in Quebec, or outside the United States and Canada, and accounts where we can’t tell, are asked once instead, the first time it matters. That is decided when an account is created, or, if it wasn’t decided then, when it next starts a new chat, and it is kept. When new chats remember, Vresk distills durable facts from the conversation after each turn (the kind of thing worth keeping, not the chat itself) and saves them to your memory. Say no, or turn it off, and new chats write nothing; if you are asked and never answer, nothing is written either. To stop it later, turn memory off in Your data: while it is off, nothing is captured or recalled in any conversation. While it is on, whether a new chat remembers follows the setting above (“Turn off for new chats” on the one-time notice also stops the chat it appears in). The Remember toggle in the toolbar at the top of a chat overrides that for any single conversation, in either direction. While a chat is capturing, the toggle reads “Remembering” with a dot beside it (on a phone, the toggle is its icon alone, with the dot on it): capture is never invisible.

What counts as a durable fact: things you say about yourself, what you are working on, organizing or planning — even when you only asked for help with it — roles you hold, what you do regularly, and what you prefer. Vresk is told not to save the question itself, only what you say about yourself while asking; not to save what only the assistant said, text you pasted or quoted, or details about other people; and not to save sensitive details about you. A word check then sets aside some facts it can tell came from pasted text or the assistant, some facts about other people, and some sensitive details; it misses many phrasings, so if something was saved that should not be, Forget everything in Your data erases what Vresk saved.

The toggle governs writing only. Facts already saved are still recalled in every conversation, whatever this toggle says. Silencing recall is the master switch, covered below.

One switch, and a way to forget

The master switch — “Turn memory off”, in Your data — turns the whole system off. Off means off everywhere: nothing is recalled and nothing is captured, in any conversation, until you turn it back on. While it is off, Vresk saves nothing about you between conversations and uses nothing it saved before.

The off period leaves no backlog. What you say while memory is off is never captured retroactively — turning memory back on does not reach back into the conversations you had while it was off.

Off is not deleted

Turning memory off does not delete what is already saved. The facts stay stored, unused, until you remove them — all at once with “Forget everything Vresk remembers” in Your data, which also removes the summary Vresk wrote from them, or along with everything else through your data controls. What deletion covers is on your data.
